After our morning hike at Arenal, we packed up and drove to La Fortuna. La Fortuna is another small Tico town, but boasts one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Costa Rica. While the waterfall is spectacular from the top… it is even more amazing from the bottom… but getting down there is quite a work out, and getting back up is damn near torture.
While my parents enjoyed the view from the top, they made the wise decision not to walk down. Between my Dad’s recent back surgery, and my Mom’s arthritis, there is no way they would have gotten back up, and I am not sure that an emergency helicopter could have landed on the water.
However, despite the long hike down…and somewhat torturous hike back up, it was worth every minute. If any of you go… I suggest that you wear your bathing suit, and pack some snacks and water, and really spend some quality time at the bottom of the waterfall, as you are able to get in and swim and enjoy. Mitzi and I did not have our bathing suits, though we still really enjoyed the sights. Doodle, you and I will definitely be swimming at the bottom, so get ready. To prepare, I am doing 1 million squats every day in hopes that it preps my thighs for the walk back up.
One final note, as with everywhere else worth seeing in Costa Rica, you need a 4 wheel drive to get there… so be prepared for the “Tico Massage” that you get when driving. And by “Tico Massage”… I mean hold onto your teeth!
